To join the OJMR and play in one of our five ensembles, you must audition.
If you’re interested, complete the form below and pay the audition registration fee, which is $40 per musician and non-refundable. Upon receipt of your registration, the orchestra administrative director will contact you.
This year, auditions are scheduled for August 29th for all ensembles. If necessary, additional days will be added depending on the number of candidates.

Audition requirements
Here are the elements that will be evaluated during your audition:
Scale
- your scale needs to be clean, precise, have secure intonation, and a good tone.
- the notes should be even and fluid
- be prepared to play your scale at different speeds and with different articulations
Piece
- accurate notes, rhythm, and tempo
- good pulse
- secure intonation
- an appropriate style of performance for the music being played
- good tone quality
- dynamic contrasts
- clear, understandable phrasing
Orchestral excerpts (Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonietta, Dolce Musica)
- good pulse
- secure intonation
- Articulations
- Nuances
- Tempo
Ensembles

DaCapo: minimum 5 years
- A SCALE of the musician’s choice of 1 or 2 octaves
- SOLO PIECE of the musician’s choice, 5 minutes maximum. Minimum level: Suzuki volume 1.
- SIGHT-READING at the judge’s request
String ensemble: minimum 6 years old
- A SCALE of the musician’s choice of 1 or 2 octaves
- SOLO PIECE of the musician’s choice, 5 minutes maximum. Minimum level: Suzuki volume 2.
- SIGHT-READING at the judge’s request

Sinfonietta: minimum 12 years old
- A major or minor SCALE of 3 octaves (2 octaves for winds), slurred and detached articulations
- SOLO PIECE of the musician’s choice, 5 minutes maximum

Audition Excerpts
